UNDERSTANDING CATCHMENTS

There are several water catchments around Melbourne – the Yarra, Dandenong, Werribee and Westernport Catchments. Most Melburnians live in these catchments, with one-third of Victorians living in the Yarra catchment, along with plants and animal species. Waterworks objective is to provide a visually engaging virtual tour of Melbourne’s water catchments to raise awareness and understanding of the scale of these catchments and the design of assets within them.

Select from various locations around Melbourne. View the city from above, discover reservoirs, rivers and wetlands, and explore sewerage treatment plants, drainage systems, and pumping stations. Each location provides detailed information about what the location is about and how it fits into Melbourne’s waterways.

“ Our team was challenged to create an immersive VR that will educate students about Melbourne’s
waterways. Our goal is to teach our users about the scale of these water catchments and help
them understand facts about sewage systems, reservoirs, water supply, waterways and drainage.
Given that our brief was targeted towards students, we really wanted to make the visuals engaging
and exciting so that our users could learn in a fun and unique way.
We chose to create a VR as we wanted to get the students to feel as immersed in the environment
as possible, and VR is a very unique way to learn.
